How can we turn our ideas into reality?
We’ve spent the last five weeks exploring the issues around climate change – both locally and globally. Now’s the time for us to consider what small changes we can make, that together will lead to big differences.
We still want to hear your thoughts around the other issues and you can share them by joining the conversation.
This isn’t about single-handedly saving the world, it’s about what we can all do together.
In 2018 we produced greenhouse gases equivalent to 422.4 kilotons of carbon dioxide here in Jersey. So, what can we do to make this as near to zero as we can?
We also want to hear the big differences that you want to see locally. What should we all do and what changes would you like to see our government make?
So, what can you do to help?
Don’t underestimate the power your individual actions can make – start by doing just one thing, even something small – it can make a difference and can lead to you inspiring others.
How can I make a difference?
Here are just some ideas, all of which are focusing on reducing the amount of greenhouse gases that are produced:
Buy local, seasonal fruit and veg
Support local producers
Work from home one day a week
Buy your clothes and furniture second hand (and sell or giveaway to charity shops things you no longer need)
Buy fewer items of good quality clothing that will last longer or can be sold or given away second hand.
Use the Good on You app to check the environmental and social impact on clothing brands you are thinking of supporting
Hold big businesses to account. Contact your favourite brand and ask them what they are doing about their impact on the environment
Cycle, walk or get the bus to work or school once a week
Walk to the corner shop to get your pint of milk
Share lifts when meeting friends or work colleagues
Consider taking holidays closer to home rather than flying long distance frequently (when we’re allowed to travel again!)
Consider the fuel consumption when buying your next vehicle or to switching to electric
Reduce the amount of meat you eat in your diet and try to buy local where possible
Use reusable coffee cups and water bottles
Take your own reusable bags to the shops
Improve the insulation in your home
Plant trees in your garden or volunteer to help with Island planting initiatives
